Fact-Checking Policy
Last updated: May 14, 2026
What we verify
- Unicode code points and names against the latest Unicode Standard.
- Cross-platform rendering claims against current Apple, Google, Microsoft, Twitter/X and Samsung emoji sets.
- Slang and cultural meanings against current usage on TikTok, Instagram, X/Twitter, Discord, and Reddit — not against archived or outdated sources.
- Historical claims against primary Unicode Consortium documents, public emoji proposal PDFs, and reputable secondary sources.
Our verification workflow
- Writer drafts the page citing internal source notes.
- A second editor independently checks the Unicode and platform facts.
- Slang claims are cross-checked against at least two current platform examples (within the last 12 months).
- Editor in chief signs off before publish.
How often we re-check
- Unicode facts — re-checked whenever a new Unicode version is released (roughly once a year).
- Slang meanings — reviewed at minimum every 90 days because internet slang shifts fast.
- Platform rendering notes — reviewed when a major OS or app rolls out a new emoji set.
